Hydroelectric power at the Mills district

Producing energy under your feet

The river Regnitz in Bamberg has been used to generate energy for centuries: in the past, numerous mills were operated here with hydropower. Since 1983 there is a modern underground hydroelectric power station at the ”Upper Mills”. Four turbines now generate around 270 kW of electricity per hour. Hotel NEPOMUK, ECKERTS Restaurant and the student residence are supplied with 100% sustainable and locally generated energy. Additional electricity is fed into the grid.

So when you sit on the terrace and the Regnitz rushes below you, water power is converted into electricity in a huge generator hall under the bridge and another generator room under the roof terrace. Renewable energy for ECKERTS Restaurant and our neighbors.
